The 3000 years old standard umbrella design is finally beingrevolutionized without affecting the aesthetics and usability of a regular umbrella. The KAZbrella, designed by a start-up company KAZ Designs, is an umbrella which opens from the inside out. Some of you might think that this feature is not something special, but this unconventional way of unfolding the KAZbrella and its spectacular engineering make it a coveted item for several reasons.
It is no secret that standard umbrellas, although in use in their current form for the past 300 years, have a couple of downsides which are immensely annoying. First of all, no one likes to carry around a dripping wet umbrella and people around you must always be wary when you are unfolding it, otherwise they risk an eye injury. The KAZbrella makes all of these issues a thing of the past.

The KAZbrella offers more functionality without sacrificing aestethics
Like we have said, the KAZbrella opens from the inside out. This patented design allows the wet side of the umbrella to be on the inside once you fold it. This means that you don’t have to worry at all about a dripping umbrella anymore. Apart from that, its folding mechanism is superior to that of standard umbrellas as it allows you to unfold the KAZbrella in confined spaces so you don’t have to first get out of your car and unfold your umbrella and get wet in the process.
The KAZbrella is also quite efficient when facing strong gusts of wind due to its double spoked design. If, by some chance, the wind gets the better of it and blows it inside out, you can restore it to its original form with a simple press of a button. The high level of durability of this umbrella is achieved with excellent engineering and great materials. The KAZbrella is made from an aircraft-grade aluminum shaft, lightweight fiberglass spokes, and a water repellent-coated, breathable double canopy.
KAZ Designs, being a start-up company, have opted for crowd-funding in order to raise the funds necessary for making the KAZbrella available for purchase and luckily for all who are interested in it, they have met their goal. You can pre-order the basic one on their Kickstarter page for $53, and if you are looking for something to set your new umbrella apart from the rest, KAZ Designs offer personalized packages with your initials on the KAZbrella or the logo of your company. Of course, the personalized packages are a bit more expensive.
Umbrellas have been around for over 3000 years, but apart from small variances, no one has ever questioned changing its basic mechanics, until now. This is where the 'KAZbrella' comes in. After many years of research and engineering, the KAZbrella was created to maintain the functionality of an umbrella but alter it in a way that makes more sense and is much more convenient. The umbrella folds 'inside out' meaning no drips, dry to handle and can open/close in small spaces
Use an umbrella that looks as good as it functions with the KAZbrella Reverse Folding Inverted Umbrella. Utilizing patented technology, this accessory opens inside out. Its unique design ensures that the wet side remains inside when it is closed. This makes KAZbrella dry to handle, allowing you to place it on any surface without making it wet. In addition, the inverted umbrella enables you to get in and out of your car in the rain with ease. Simply close the umbrella into the tiniest gap of your car door while staying dry. Likewise, KAZbrella makes opening and closing an umbrella in closed places easy. Moreover, any residual water stays inside the canopy until you are able to shake it out and leave it to dry. Ideal for crowded places, the umbrella opens up and over you, avoiding the risk of poking someone in the eye.

While some 3D printed products that launch on Kickstarter feel a bit cheap or not inspiring enough to really excite the masses, a new product has just launched a crowdfunding campaign that seems to have it all: it’s cheap, 3D printed, functional and features a design so clever and simple that you become annoyed that you haven’t thought of it yourself. It’s the KAZbrella, a reverse-engineered umbrella that opens and folds to the outside.
Designed by Kaz Designs, a family owned business benefiting from mastermind engineer Jenan, this is simply a very intriguing product. As its designers describe it on Kickstarter, they have essentially redesigned the mechanics of the umbrella to optimize comfort, durability and the chances of staying dry. 'Through many years of research and engineering we have redesigned the mechanics of the umbrella whilst maintaining the familiar look. The KAZbrella is a patented, reverse folding umbrella [that] opens inside out - Think of it like a flower opening. This leaves the wet side of the canopy contained on the inside when closed. The KAZbrella is dry to handle. It won't drip on the floor or soak anything it touches,’ they write.
This means that the KAZbrella is perfect for opening and closing it in confined spaces, getting into your car, all of that without getting wet. It also supposedly minimizes the chance of poking someone in the eye. Furthermore, redesigning an umbrella also gave the Kaz team the opportunity of making their model stronger and more durable than ever before. ‘As the KAZbrella is double spoked, it is extremely strong. In the unlikely event that the KAZbrella is blown inside out, it's not a problem. A click of the button and the KAZbrella will restore back to its open shape,’ they write.
As they explain, master designer Jenan has previously had a successful career as an aeronautical and offshore engineer, and has now applied his knowledge to his invention. ‘Precise engineering and mathematical equations have been used to ensure the KAZbrella outperforms a conventional umbrella whilst keeping its familiar aesthetics and usability. This has not yet been achieved by any other umbrella designer,’ he says.
And as you might expect, 3D printing has played a crucial role in the design process of these revolutionary brollies. Key in that stage of design was family member Riann, who works as a 3D designer and transferred sketched into 3D printable components. These were subsequently outsourced to a 3D printing service and their SLS 3D printer. ‘The engineering behind the KAZbrella is so precise that every millimetre in the design has been considered to ensure it operates beautifully. Using 3Dprint-UK we were able to develop our prototypes making small refinements each time. We then sprayed the 3D printed parts black so our prototype started looking like the real deal!’, the team says on the website of 3Dprint-UK. It’s not yet known what role 3D printing will actually play during production.
Unsurprisingly, this very promising concept is a huge Kickstarter hit already. Having just launched, the KAZbrella has already nearly reached its intended goal of £25,000 (or approximately $38,000 USD). The future is thus looking bright for the KAZbrella.
But of course, a lot of interesting Kickstarter products are just interesting concepts miles away from production. In those cases, it’s always quite a gamble to see if the final product lives up to all the hype. In this specific case, however, research and development processes have long since been completed, while working production samples have already been realized. ‘Over the last 12 months, we have established a close working relationship with our manufacturers who have 20 years’ experience in producing innovative, quality umbrellas. Together with the expertise of the manufacturers and Jenan's engineering experience we are confident that we can overcome any technical difficulties that may arise,’ they confidently state.
That means the funds raised through Kickstarter will be reserved for production itself. As they explain, that manufacturing process still consists of: ‘(1) Tooling - as this is a unique product every component has been specifically designed and will require special tooling to make them. (2) Manufacturing - setting up production line, quality control and testing of the product. (3) Logistics - To ensure the delivery is quick and efficient.’ If all things go according to plan, the first KAZbrellas can be shipped by October 2015.
Looking to jump onboard with this very interesting product? The Kickstarter campaign for the KAZbrella will stay open for the whole of May, and an early bird special costs as little as £35 (or $54 USD). While slightly more expensive than a regular umbrella, not only will this model last a lot longer, it also works much better. Who knew staying dry could be this simple?
Don’t you hate it when the wind blows your umbrella inside out? Not a problem with the KAZbrella. That’s actually how it’s supposed to be, which is quite unusual for an umbrella. This design comes from KAZ Designs, which recently wrapped up a successful Kickstarter campaign. Is an inside-out umbrella better, though?
The KAZbrella folds upward to close, so the top of the umbrella is on the inside of the collapsed shape. It actually looks like any other umbrella when it’s closed, but the designers say it’s considerably more convenient than a traditional umbrella. For one, it won’t drip all over the place when you close it after use. Because the wet surface is on the inside, all the water pools inside and you can flip it over to pour it out rather than let it drip all over as with a regular umbrella.
Opening a KAZbrella is also allegedly less annoying and dangerous for those around you. A regular umbrella swings upward when it opens, meaning it will basically smack anything or anyone within a few feet. The KAZbrella swings down from over your head, so it won’t hit anything in the process. And should a strong gust of wind blow it “inside-out,” that’s no problem because it’s not technically inside-out for the KAZbrella. You can click the deployment button again and it snaps back into place. The double-spoke design should make it harder to blow open anyway.
The initial Kickstarter rewards are supposed to be going out to backers in October, then the KAZbrella will be on sale to the general public not long after. The Kickstarter prices were in the neighborhood of £39-65 ($61-102) depending on color and pattern, so expect something similar if you want to be on the cutting edge of umbrella design.
Given that most human beings lack the natural oil coating that allows ducks to weather a rainstorm without turning into soaking, bedraggled versions of their former selves, we, as humans, have to put a great deal more effort into staying dry when the weather turns against us. The most surefire way to do so is to stay home, sit by the fireplace, snuggle under a blanket, and read a good book. Unfortunately, that option isn’t always available. As such, there are a bevy of slickers, rain hoods, covered walkways, waterproof bags, and umbrellas that have been created to assist.
However, despite our ability to put a man on the moon (the technological standard by which my mother critiques all design failures) we have yet to develop a satisfactory way to keep dry. The rain slicker leaves a soggy line wherever it ends and, of course, leaves you with a heap of dripping coat to deal with upon arrival at your destination; the rain hood crushes your hair; the umbrella hat isn’t terribly dignified (not to mention leaving your shoulders exposed); and the covered walkways eventually end.
The umbrella is the most ubiquitous way of dealing with the rain and brings with it a whole series of problems, all of which are immediately and viscerally memorable. The first problem: the umbrella, as we currently have it, requires an elaborate car entry procedure during which time we must stand in the rain fully exposed before it and then us can enter the vehicle, or else try to close up the umbrella from an awkward seated position with the door wide open, not exactly keeping us dry. The second problem: once it is closed, no matter how carefully we try to avoid it happening, the umbrella drips, leaving soggy car seats, wet floors, and damp storage spots in its wake. The third problem: this is the first but in reverse, upon leaving the vehicle we must again brave the elements and hog the space around us as we open the umbrella for use.
Designer Jenan Kazim didn’t see an insurmountable set of problems here; instead, his design instincts kicked in and he began to reverse engineer a solution based on a desired state (dryness, ease of storage, accessibility). The result is pure genius…and so obvious it leaves the rest of us wondering why on earth it took 3,000 years to get here. That is design at its best.
The newly envisioned umbrella, the KAZbrella, takes the problem and turns it on its head. While closed, the KAZbrella looks like a traditional umbrella. However, when it is opened, it is the inverse of its former self. This allows a person to get into their car with their KAZbrella still protecting them from the rain, narrow the car door to a crack, and then pull the center of the umbrella downward to close it. Once the now closed umbrella is pulled into the car, the wet surface is on the inside, safely contained and not dripping all over your upholstery, papers, or fellow passengers.
The creation of this idea was supported by access to 3D modeling and 3D printing technology. Kazim is an engineer and that interest in precision is what allows the newly envisioned umbrella to operate so smoothly. By utilizing 3D printing to prototype and refine and test again, Kazim was able to create parts with the type of precision necessary in order to quickly evaluate and make necessary adjustments. So, while the role that 3D printing played in the creation of this product may be overshadowed by the fantastic creation itself, those in the know will realize that without 3D printing and affordable rapid prototyping capabilities, it has taken us 3,000 years to get here.
The KAZbrella will be launching on Kickstarter for crowdfunding; you can get on the mailing list to be informed when the campaign goes viral.
Let us know what you think about this brilliant design made possible by 3D printing in the KAZbrella forum thread over at 3DPB.com.
Designed and developed in Great Britain, the KAZbrella is the only umbrella in the world with a Patented reverse opening frame and tensioning technology. Thanks to this technology, KAZbrella opens inside out. This leaves the wet side of the canopy contained on the inside when closed. It is therefore dry to handle and can be placed on surfaces without them getting wet.

Benefits of the KAZbrella
KAZbrella is the only umbrella in the world that turns its frame completely inside out. British engineer and inventor, Jenan Kazim has spent a lifetime developing innovative design ideas which challenged the conventional boundaries. The KAZbrella has been engineered and designed to address the flaws associated with conventional umbrellas, which have largely remained unchanged for thousands of years. It has achieved this whilst being stylish and keeping the aesthetic look of the classic umbrella. KAZbrella was launched on the crowd-funding platform Kickstarter in 2015, achieving over 10 times its original target and receiving widespread acclaim and worldwide media coverage. Jenan, along with his wife, textile designer Wendy, have worked together combining their skills to produce an innovatively engineered umbrella with beautiful bespoke textile designs.
QUALITY The KAZbrella is manufactured from high quality materials, including carbon fibre and anodised aluminium. The canopies are tailored using double-folded seams and water-repellant thread. The fabric is also specially dyed using selected Pantone colours. • WATERPROOF The KAZbrella is coated to ensure that 95% of the water is repelled and runs off the canopy. It is also waterproofed to 500mm water pressure. • DOUBLE CANOPY The shape of the double canopy minimises the uplift on the canopy in strong wind. • AEROELASTIC TECHNOLOGY The KAZbrella is engineered with sliding tips to alter the shape of the frame minimising the effect of the wind. • BRITISH ENGINEERING Designed in Great Britain, the KAZbrella is the result of over 40 years of experience at the cutting edge of engineering This is the world’s most advanced and innovative umbrella.
PATENTED The KAZbrella frame technology is patented worldwide. • TWO YEAR WARRANTY The KAZbrella comes with a 2 year guarantee. • FAMILY BUSINESS The bespoke KAZbrella canopy designs are created by Jenan’s wife, textile designer Wendy Kazim, marrying innovation with design.
.THE INSIDE OUT UMBRELLA
DRY TO HOLD The reverse folding mechanism ensures that the KAZbrella is dry to handle. As the outside of the canopy is dry when closed, it can be placed on surfaces without them getting wet. • STRONG IN THE WIND The design of the KAZbrella minimises the chances of it inverting in strong gusts of wind. In the unlikely event that this does happen, it can be reverted to its original shape at the push of a button, using its patented latch release system. • OPENS AND CLOSES IN CONFINED SPACES The best way to open the KAZbrella is by holding it up vertically. As it opens up and over the user, it avoids the danger of poking people in the eye. Ideal for crowded situations. • PERFECT FOR THE CAR Getting in and out of your car in the rain is not a problem. You can open and close the KAZbrella through the smallest gap of a car door, whilst remaining dry
There are numerous umbrellas that claim to solve one or more problems of the traditional design. The Rainshader, for example, is meant to be windproof, while the Sa bounces back from being blown inside out. The new Kazbrella, meanwhile, is said to eliminate drips and fold away less awkwardly.
Designed by engineer and inventor Jenan Kazim, hence its name, the Kazbrella has a neat trick that helps it to achieve its claimed benefits. Unlike traditional umbrellas that fold down at the outside, it folds down at the center using a double-spoke mechanism.
The center-collapsing design means that drips are contained inside the folded umbrella, avoiding wet floors from storing it after use and wet trousers from brushing against it. it also means that the Kazbrella opens in an up-and-over motion rather than an out-and-up motion. As a result, it's reported easier to open and close when entering or exiting a building or car and is less awkward to open and close when in crowds.
As well as facilitating the Kazbrella's center-collapsing system, the double-spoke mechanism is said to make it stronger than other umbrellas and better performing in the wind. In the event that the Kazbrella does blow inside out, it can be quickly righted by pulling the mechanism down and then back up slightly. This will pop the canopy back into shape.
According to Kazim, the biggest challenge was to produce the inside out folding system while retaining the curvature, tension and usability of a conventional umbrella. Having created a mechanism that achieves this, he has also used "high-end materials" to ensure a good build quality. The shaft of the Kazbrella is made of aircraft-grade aluminum, the spokes of lightweight fiberglass and the double canopy of pongee polyester covered with water-repellent coating.
A Kickstarter campaign to raise money for the production of the Kazbrella is underway. At the time of writing, pledges from £35 (US$53) are still available. Assuming all goes to plan with the campaign and production, delivery is estimated to start in October.
The video below is the Kickstarter pitch for the Kazbrella.

There are few things more helpful than a really good umbrella. I had one for about six or seven years. It was wide and sturdy, opened and closed without getting snagged or stuck. But despite how much I appreciated it, it was still prone to the same issues all umbrellas have: They're difficult to open and close in tight spaces, they don't survive windy days, and you have to find a water-friendly place to shake off and dry them.
Well, some of these may be problems of the past. Inside-out umbrellas are hitting the market in big ways now, likely thanks in no small part to the KAZbrella. Originally a Kickstarter campaign in 2015, the British-designed product looks like an umbrella after a windy day when it's not open. It opens downward over your head to avoid hitting anyone in the face, especially on a crowded street. The design basically traps any water along the folds of until you have to, well, shake it off and let it dry someplace. At least you're not dripping water everywhere now.
The KAZbrella retails for £45 ($60) plus shipping from England, but there are already a number of cheaper options out there. Rainlax, for instance, has a similarly designed and water-trapping umbrella that sells for a little over $20 on Amazon. The Rainlax umbrellas also sport cool designs on the inside/outside of the umbrella, making them pretty stylish as well. The only potential downside, per a review from Racked, is that the Rainlax umbrellas are pretty large, almost tent-like.
Then again, umbrellas are supposed to keep you dry, and inverted umbrellas seem like they're designed from tip to to handle to do just that.
Gadgets are cool! Gadgets are useless! Gadgets make life more fun! Yes, we all want gadgets, even if it’s just to play with it once and then throw it away. They are fun to have and fun to give away. Some of them are expensive, some are really cheap. Some make your life easier, some just clog up the room or look pretty. Innovation should be fun too!

Umbrellas have existed for more than 3000 years, but aside from slight updates and innovations along the way, these rainy day staples haven’t changed all that much. Sure, they’re lighter than they used to be, can now be opened with the press of a button, and are available in a wide variety of colors and patterns, but they're still a pain to open and close from inside a car, and they still drip water all over the floor.
Umbrellas have existed for more than 3000 years, but aside from slight updates and innovations along the way, these rainy day staples haven’t changed all that much. KAZbrella, a new umbrella designed by aeronautical engineer Jenan Kazim, is changing all that: It combats all of your typical umbrella woes while maintaining the umbrella’s classic shape. The KAZbrella opens inside out—think of a flower’s petals blossoming—and closes in on itself, keeping the wet surface on the inside and preventing water from pooling up around it. This also makes it easier to open and close within confined spaces, letting you stay dry until the last second (or avoid poking out someone's eye on the street). Perhaps its greatest feature is a button that restores the umbrella’s shape if the wind blows it inside out. No more throwing out umbrellas mid storm!
Kazim spent 10 years developing the KAZbrella, which has been more than fully funded on Kickstarter. There’s still time to back the campaign; pledges of at least $53 get you your very own KAZbrella.
